RAPID CITY, S.D. Tribal leaders want to assume management of Sioux San Hospital in Rapid City in a move they describe as “a historic self-governance effort.”
The Oglala Sioux Tribe, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe announced Friday that they have authorized the Great Plains Tribal Chairmen’s’ Health Board to pursue taking over the management of the hospital.
The board will now take steps to begin negotiating with the Indian Health Service to transfer control of Sioux San under the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act.
The tribes decided to act after the IHS announced last summer it planned to close the inpatient and emergency departments of the Sioux San Hospital.
